How Lodestellar works
How Lodestellar works
1. Upload an EPD
It just needs to follow EN 15804+A2 and can be either draft or published.
2. Start a quality review
Lodestellar runs extensive checks on requirements from ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2, as well as additional quality best practices.
3. Receive your feedback
You'll receive clear line-by-line feedback about ways to raise quality ahead of verification.
FAQs
FAQs
What gets checked in uploaded EPDs?
Lodestellar is designed to review EPDs against all requirements stipulated in ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2. We also include checks aligned with requirements commonly used by programme operators operating under the ECO Platform, as well as own additional quality checks.
We align with ECO Platform led requirements because EPDs that follow these rules are generally considered high quality and well structured within the industry.
The tool will recognise which format your EPD needs to follow and then focus on what’s visible in your EPD, including transparency requirements, numerical consistency, and basic sanity of reported values. The background support data is outside of the scope. No cPCR / Part B yet, but it’s coming.
Lodestellar is independent of any programme operator and of ECO Platform. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by them. Our goal is simply to help anyone producing EN 15804+A2 EPDs achieve a consistently high level of quality.
What file formats can I upload?
You can upload EPDs in the formats commonly used during drafting and publication:
- DOCX / Word
- PowerPoint
- Excel
Lodestellar reviews EPD documents themselves, whether draft or already published, not LCA models.
Background LCA reports and supporting documents are not currently supported, but planned for a future update. At the moment, digital EPD formats such as ILCD+EPD are also not supported.
At what stage of the EPD process can Lodestellar be used?
We primarily designed Lodestellar to be used as an internal review during EPD creation, prior to verification or publication, although it can be used at any stage of the process, including on published EPDs.
It's best to identify any potential quality issues as early as possible to efficiently create a high quality EPD and significantly reduce costs, time, and risks that come with issues needing to be resolved later.
The aim is always to help everyone better understand what high quality EPDs look like and highlight aspects of the document that may benefit from improvement. We support greater transparency and accountability for quality across the sector, which means enhancing the role of EPD professionals and not replacing independent verification.
How accurate is the quality review?
The tool is smart, but not infallible. It runs on a large language model with well designed guardrails and carefully crafted checks. Use it as an additional quality layer, but still use your own judgement.
We are developing internal benchmarking methods to track how the tool performs and improves over time. Our goal is to publish information about its accuracy and progress as the system evolves.
Independent verification remains essential, and Lodestellar is designed to support better EPD quality and understanding, not to replace the judgement of experienced verifiers.
Can't I just use my own AI?
We've tried that a lot ourselves. Even with hundreds of individual prompts, it just doesn't match the quality of a dedicated EPD quality review. We've carefully designed Lodestellar to handle EPD quality reviews as efficiently, thoroughly, helpfully (and still as affordably) as possible, which is not as simple as training a large language model on the requirements, but ensuring every possible quality issue is codified in the right way. We are constantly developing that so we can keep raising quality beyond compliance.
How does it compare with tools from LCA software providers?
Lodestellar is independent of all EPD programme operators and also all LCA software. Their own tools work slightly differently. They are mostly focused on checking the integrity of LCA calculations, avoiding major issues, and validating the process. Lodestellar thoroughly checks and advises on EPD quality issues in a ways that even go beyond compliance.
How is my company data used?
Your data is kept secure and you can delete it at any time. All data is automatically deleted after a year. Your specific company data is not used to train AI models. We may use anonymised, aggregated usage data only to improve our services, as outlined in our Terms and Conditions.
Why's it called Lodestellar?
We started out as Lodestar, back at Digital Construction 2022. That's a star used for navigation, typically the North Star. In modern usage, a lodestar can be anything that serves as an inspiration or guide. For example, verified environmental impacts now serve as the lodestar for growing a competitive, sustainable business.
To launch our tool, we needed a truly unique name, however. So we kept lode, the old English word for path, way or course, and we added 'stellar', which still refers to a star but also emphasises quality.
Use Lodestellar to guide your EPDs, and your wider business sustainability, along the path of quality.
Why EPD professionals use Lodestellar:
Why EPD professionals use Lodestellar:
Reduced uncertainty
By conducting a pre-verification quality review, teams and their stakeholders gain early confidence in an EPD during its development stage. This can enable commercial discussions and project decisions to tentatively proceed, subject to the verification.
Better resource efficiency
After fixing potential issues early and internally, there will be fewer clarification rounds, fewer corrections, and less back-and-forth during the later EPD verification process.
Faster timescales, lower costs
You can approach verification with a measurable record of your EPD quality and completeness, reducing the workload of verifiers who no longer need to quote costs and timescales based on worst-case quality assumptions.
Reduced compliance risk
This extra quality layer provides a deeper understanding of your own EPD, reducing potential unknown weaknesses. This helps guard your organisation, not just against the risk of a delayed or failed verification, but also the risk that a published EPD of unsuitable quality could later become unusable for regulation, procurement, or building-level assessments, or face legal challenge from a competitor.
Raised EPD literacy
EPDs offer more value when more people better understand them - and not just EPD specialists. This extra quality layer offers clear explanations, making EPD quality understandable to everyone in your organisation.
